Medical expenses are not projected to decrease in the upcoming years. However, the number of people who are able to afford this expense is projected to decrease.
The same holds true for dental expenses, although more people would rather skip the dental care in favor for medical care. For those who want dental work done, but simply cannot afford the work in their home country, there is now a trend of tourist dentistry. This trend features dentist work done in another country than the person’s home country and is often accompanied with some site seeing or other activities that help to make it a tourist adventure, not just a trip to the dentist’s office. Visiting a dental clinic abroad can be considerably cheaper, but it can also be riskier. There are some very serious risks when visiting a dental clinic abroad. The first of the risks is the experience and education of the dentist. Some countries do not regulate their dentists as tightly as America regulates its dentists. This means that there is the potential for the dentist to practice without a license or to practice dentistry with the older techniques, having not learned the new dental techniques. There is also the risk that the dentist may be performing the procedures so often that he or she does not take the time and care in each procedure as is necessary. This stems from the dentist having too much experience in one aspect of dentistry without the experience in the other aspects of the field. Another risk when visiting a dental clinic abroad is that the clinic will not be as clean or as sterile as the offices in the United States. Remember, just because the room looks clean does not mean that there are not germs and bacterium in the room that can cause many problems for the patient. These small germs and bacterium are not seen by the naked eye, and therefore can be hard to detect when visiting the dentist’s office before a procedure. There is also the potential for the dentist not to practice personal hygiene techniques to avoid the transfer of germs from the dentist to patient. There is even the potential for the equipment to be improperly sterilized between patients, increasing the risk for infections. The dentists in United States are all insured, educated and watched for these failings. |
